🎉 What to Expect at the Stockholm Winter Carnival

The Stockholm Winter Carnival is built around hands-on participation and timeless winter activities. Bring your gear, your sense of adventure, and your love for the outdoors.

🛶 Team Boat Relays

One of the most unique events of the day, team boat relays add laughter and teamwork to the snow-covered landscape. Expect creative strategies and plenty of cheering from spectators.

🎿 Ski & Snowshoe Dashes

Fast, fun, and friendly, these short-course races welcome skiers and snowshoers of all experience levels. Whether you’re racing or cheering, the energy is contagious.

🛷 Tube Races Down the Hill

A crowd favorite for kids and adults alike, tube racing turns the local hill into a launchpad for speed, smiles, and winter joy.

🐍 The Return of Snow Snakes (Historic Event)

A highlight of the 2026 carnival is the return of Snow Snakes, a historic Stockholm winter tradition. This unique competition involves sliding long wooden “snakes” down snow or ice tracks for distance and accuracy.

Important Snow Snakes Notes:

  • Pre-registration required

  • Pre-event pickup of snow snakes is mandatory

  • Snow snakes have been generously donated by the Bossie Family, including Wendy Bossie, Jeff Bossie, Marty Bossie, and family

This revived event connects today’s participants with generations of winter history in northern Maine.

🧤 What to Bring

Participants are encouraged to come prepared for an active winter day:

  • Warm winter clothing and boots

  • Sleds and tubes

  • Skis or snowshoes

  • Any winter sports gear you have on hand

  • A good attitude and sense of fun

This is a bring-your-own-gear style event that embraces creativity and participation over perfection.

🍲 Community Lunch & Small-Town Hospitality

At noon, enjoy a community lunch served on-site, available by donation. This shared meal is a core part of the carnival experience—bringing everyone together to warm up, refuel, and swap stories between events.

🌲 Why the Stockholm Winter Carnival Is Worth the Trip

Unlike large-scale festivals, the Stockholm Winter Carnival focuses on connection, tradition, and simple winter pleasures. It’s an ideal event for:

  • Families looking for free winter fun

  • Visitors seeking authentic Maine experiences

  • Photographers capturing classic winter scenes

  • Anyone who loves community-driven outdoor events
