Fascinating Moose Facts: Discover Maine's Majestic Mammal

The Maine state mammal, the moose, is a towering presence in the wilderness. Moose facts about a fully grown male, or bull, can stand 6 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh over 1,400 pounds. Moose are known for dining on aquatic plants in summer and tree bark, leaves, and balsam fir in cooler seasons. Despite their seemingly clumsy appearance, they can run up to 35 mph and swim over 10 miles at a stretch.

The best times to spot moose are early morning or dusk, particularly from mid-spring through late June. Notable features include the "bell," a flap of skin under their throat, and the fact that they lack top front teeth. In the Moosehead Lake Region, moose outnumber people 3 to 1.

Only male moose grow antlers, shedding them in early winter and regrowing them annually for display during mating season. Interestingly, the first moose protection law was passed in 1930. Female moose often have twins after their first calf.

Moose have poor eyesight, seeing only about 25 feet ahead, and prefer shady, wet areas like bogs and marshes. After dark, moose are hard to spot on roads, posing significant hazards to vehicles and passengers. Always remain alert when driving at night.
