🌱 A Brief History of Potatoes in Maine

The first fields of crop potatoes in North America were planted in the early spring of 1719 by migrants from Ulster, Ireland, at what is now called South Portland and Merrymeeting Bay, Maine! Maine’s cool summer temperatures and rich soils make it one of the premier places in the U.S. for growing potatoes.

Potatoes are hardy and thrive in the region’s climate, where summer days reach 70–75°F and nights drop to a cool 50–60°F. They prefer an inch of rain per week and can suffer from rot with prolonged heavy rain. But under the care of Maine farmers, these spuds grow strong!

📖 Did You Know?

  • Maine’s cool nights and rich soil make it ideal for producing high-quality potatoes. It’s no surprise Aroostook County is often called the “Potato Capital of the East.”
