Celebrate the profound connections between the Wabanaki people, Henry David Thoreau, and the pristine wilderness that inspired his iconic book, The Maine Woods.
Held annually in the majestic Moosehead Lake region, this unique summer festival invites visitors to walk in the footsteps of Thoreau and the Penobscot guides who led him—Joseph Attean and Joe Polis—on three transformational expeditions. Through nature walks, traditional canoe trips, historic presentations, hands-on workshops, and cultural storytelling, guests experience Maine's wild beauty and enduring Indigenous heritage.

Destination Education
Each third week of July, Greenville hosts an inspiring array of educational and cultural programming. Renowned experts share insight on everything from moose biology to botany, Wabanaki history to Thoreau’s legacy.
Nature Connections
Explore traditional canoe routes once traveled by the Wabanaki and Thoreau. Daily events include guided nature hikes, canoe trips, and immersive sessions in the wilderness.
Heritage Experiences

Penobscot Ways in the Woods & Waters: a 3-day immersive canoe trip led by the Penobscot Nation Cultural & Historic Preservation Department. Limited space; registration required ($725 per person).
