Baxter State Park 2025 Guide: Hiking, Wildlife & 2025 Visitor Updates
📍 Tucked deep in the Maine Highlands, near Millinocket in Piscataquis County, lies a wilderness haven that is as iconic as it is untamed — Baxter State Park. Known for its rugged terrain, vast forestland, abundant wildlife, and the legendary Mount Katahdin, Maine’s tallest peak at 5,268 feet, Baxter is the ultimate outdoor adventure destination. Adventure awaits with your Baxter State Park 2025 Guide
This isn’t your average state park — it’s independently managed, entirely self-funded, and carefully preserved according to the vision of its founder, Governor Percival P. Baxter.
🌄 Why Visit Baxter State Park?
Whether you're an ambitious hiker or a peaceful paddler, Baxter offers 220+ miles of trails, 40+ peaks, alpine ecosystems, and unmatched solitude.

⛰️ Must-Do: Summit Mount Katahdin
Baxter’s crown jewel, Mount Katahdin, is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and one of the most sought-after summits in the Northeast. With several trailheads (Abol, Roaring Brook, Katahdin Stream), this is a bucket list hike for adventurers from Maine and beyond.
TIP: The terrain is rugged, and routes like the Knife Edge Trail are extremely exposed and not for the faint of heart.
🅿️ NEW for 2025: The Katahdin Trailhead Pass (KTP)
To preserve the fragile alpine ecosystem and maintain a peaceful wilderness experience, Baxter has updated its parking and trailhead access system.
🌟 Key 2025 Changes:
New Name: Day Use Parking Reservation → Katahdin Trailhead Pass (KTP)
Fee Update: $10 per pass (up from $5)
Limit: 2 passes per person per month
Open to All on April 1st: Reservations begin April 1st annually
Maine Residents: Guaranteed access to 70–100% of daily passes

If you're not using your KTP, cancel to free up the space for others.

🌱 What Are We Protecting?
Baxter’s unique alpine environment is home to:
Diapensia (can live up to 200 years!)
Lapland Rosebay (found only in 4 U.S. states)
Alpine Azalea (sensitive to trampling and climate change)
Bigelow’s Sedge, critical habitat for the Katahdin Arctic Butterfly, found nowhere else in the world.
