📍 Trailhead Access From Greenville:

  • Travel 7 miles north on Lily Bay Road.

  • Turn right onto Prong Pond Road (gravel road).

  • Follow signs for B-52 Memorial for 8 miles (high-clearance vehicle recommended).

  • Trailhead parking is located on the right, across from the path.


🛻 Vehicle Tip:

A 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended due to rough and remote roads beyond Prong Pond.

Easy hiking trail (~10–15 minutes to reach the first debris). The hike is family-friendly but be mindful of the terrain, especially after rain or snow.


The Tragic Tale Behind the Memorial

On a bitter January day in 1963, a nine-man crew aboard a B-52C bomber departed Westover Air Force Base for a low-altitude radar evasion training flight. Facing -14°F temperatures and 40 mph winds, the plane encountered catastrophic turbulence over Maine's rugged terrain. The vertical stabilizer tore off, sending the massive aircraft into a fatal descent.


Only two crew members survived. The scattered wreckage, untouched and haunting, stretches across several acres and offers a solemn but inspiring experience for visitors.
